For years, the Turks & Caicos Islands' considerable natural attributes were known to just a fortunate few -- many of them divers and snorkelers exploring the stunning ring of coral reefs and dramatic drop-offs of the continental shelf wall. But the sun-kissed archipelago is undiscovered no more: Overnight, it seems, resorts, restaurants, and tour operators have sprung up like mushrooms after a spring rain. Construction along the beauteous 19km (12 miles) of Grace Bay Beach is fashioning a lineup of sleek condos and resort hotels, and the tourist infrastructure is racing to catch up. Notoriously potholed dirt roads have been neatly paved (sidewalks even!), and a brand-new Hotel School at the Grace Bay Club is helping train a first-generation hospitality community. Those bleached beaches and blue-on-blue waters now serve as backdrop for a string of resorts along Provo's Grace Bay, a gentle 12-mile crescent on the island's northern shore whose eastern half includes a number of resorts, including a Club Med and a Beaches. Among the dozen or so other resorts of various levels of luxury is the Grace Bay Club, a high-end, 21-suite hotel where we were staying. But while those resorts might suggest overdevelopment, what is fascinating about Provo is that it seems to be a place where everything is either in the state of being built up or torn down. New houses pepper the arid, brush filled hills all over the island, including some whopping mansions on its southern coast, and the well-appointed Provo Golf and Country Club fills the interior of the eastern end. The island's sheer natural beauty is complemented by an array of fancy restaurants and decked-out visitors looking for excellent scuba diving (check), fresh seafood (check), or just a sunburn (check, ouch, check). That ruggedness, however, can also prove inviting to those adventurous enough to take to the secondary roads, where some of the island's best food and most beautiful beaches can be found. (In the island's defense, many of the main roads are paved and other lesser roads are in the process of being improved, according to the Turks and Caicos Tourism Board.)
